The Complete Guide to Loft and Skylight Blinds | 247 Blinds

Practical

Posted 12/05/2025

Loft and skylight windows can be tricky to dress, and tend to be left bare for this very reason, which can reduce the light control and energy-efficiency of the rooms they live in. They’re angled, sometimes hard to reach, and don’t play nicely with ‘standard’ blinds. That’s where purpose built skylight blinds (also known as loft blinds) come in. These specially designed window dressings offer light-control, privacy and even energy saving benefits.  In this guide, we’ll cover everything  from blind types and benefits, to installation tips, and how to choose the right blinds for your loft window. At 247 Blinds, we offer a wide range of options designed especially for VELUX, Fakro, Dakstra, and RoofLITE skylights so you can add functionality and style to your loft windows, as well as a perfect fit.

What are skylight windows and why do they need special blinds?

Skylight windows are roof-mounted windows you’ll find in loft-conversions, attics, top-floor rooms, and home extensions. They let in plenty of natural light, help with airflow, and free up wall space. Popular skylight manufacturers include VELUX, Fakro, RoofLITE, and Dakstra. Unlike roof lanterns or dormer windows, skylights sit flush in the roof, requiring specialised blinds that stay secure and operate smoothly, despite their sloping angle.

What are skylight blinds and how do they work?

Skylight blinds are made specifically to fit roof windows. They’re fitted into a frame that sits flush to the window, preventing drooping and light sneaking through the sides. These blinds usually operate vertically within side channels which keep the fabric of the blind taut close to the glass - perfect for overhead windows where sagging could otherwise be an issue! They’re available in a range of fabrics, including blackout and energy-saving options.

Loft blinds vs standard blinds

Standard blinds are designed with ‘standard’ windows in mind, the kind that sit in line with your walls. When fitted to skylights, standard blinds will sag, shift, and won’t match the angle of the window. providing little coverage or function. Loft blinds, however, are mounted inside a frame that keeps them in place no matter the angle. They’re purpose-built to stay secure, sit flush, and work flawlessly in loft spaces.

Which blinds are best for loft windows?

Not all blinds are cut out for loft windows. The best options offer a snug fit, proper light control, and insulation.

Let’s break down the top types:

Skylight blinds

These are tailor made for roof windows, installed within a frame that matches your skylight’s exact size. Most skylight window brands include a size code on the frame, so you can order the right blind without needing to touch a tape measure. Skylight blinds come in fabrics from blackout to energy-saving, and some offer top-down bottom-up operation. They’re brilliant for blocking glare and keeping rooms at a comfortable temperature.

Roller blinds

While not the best fit for angled skylights, if you have a roof conversion featuring a dormer window, roller blinds are perfect. Space-saving and available in plenty of fabrics, including blackout, they can be fitted either inside or outside the recess. A selection of our roller blind fabrics are also available as skylight blinds, making rollers the ideal choice for any standard windows you might have in a room featuring skylights to get a perfect match.

Blackout skylight blinds

When it comes to bedrooms, nurseries, or media rooms, blackout blinds are the go-to. Fitted into side channels, they stop light from leaking through. They boost sleep quality, cut glare, and add privacy. 247 Blinds offers blackout skylight shades in a variety of colours to suit your style!

Thermal skylight blinds

Thermal skylight blinds are a game-changer for loft conversions and attic rooms—spaces that always seem to be too hot in summer and freezing come winter. With an aluminium-coated backing, these blinds boost insulation by up to 21%, helping you stay comfy all year round. The blackout option adds an extra layer of summer defence by keeping light (and heat) firmly out, so you can get better, deeper sleep even on the brightest mornings. And yes, we’ve got options to fit most VELUX windows.

How much do skylight blinds cost?

Prices vary depending on the brand (official window manufacturer produced vs custom alternatives), and the operation method (manual or electric). At 247 Blinds, we offer affordable options made specifically for a range of window types from various manufacturers - including official VELUX blinds, as well as cost-effective alternatives for VELUX, Fakro, Dakstra and RoofLITE windows - with free samples and next day delivery available!

What are the benefits of skylight blinds?

Skylight blinds aren’t just a pretty face. They help control light, improve insulation, and give you privacy where you need it most.

Block out the light

Light pouring in at the wrong time? Whether it’s a weekend lie-in or an early night, blackout skylight blinds have your back. They’re designed with side channels to block out even the most stubborn sunlight - no more annoying beams across your pillow or glare on your screen. Perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, and home cinemas, they help to create a calm, dark environment whenever you need it. Whether you’re a shift worker, a new parent, or just a fan of an afternoon nap, they’ll keep the rays at bay so you can get the rest you need.

Privacy

Just because your windows are high up doesn’t mean prying eyes can’t sneak a peek. In extensions with skylights or even loft conversions neighbours with upstairs views or taller buildings nearby can still see in - especially when the lights go on at night. Skylight blinds give you that added layer of privacy. They’re perfect for bathrooms, bedrooms or any space where you want to feel completely comfortable. And because they’re made to fit perfectly, there’s no gaping or awkward angles to worry about - just a sleek, secure blind that lets you get on with your day in peace.

Temperature control

Blinds aren’t just about keeping the light out - skylight blinds are also brilliant at keeping your room comfortable, whatever the season. In winter, thermal fabrics help to trap warm air inside so you’re not losing heat through the glass. In summer, blackout fabrics as well as thermals will help to keep the sun’s rays at bay, helping to keep things cool and shaded. The result? A more comfortable space without having to crank up the heating or turn on a fan. It’s a simple and smart way to boost your energy efficiency and keep rooms usable no matter the weather.

Style and aesthetics

Let’s face it - your blinds should look as good as they work. Luckily, skylight blinds do both. With a wide choice of colours, patterns, and fabric finishes, you can match them to your decor whether you’re into clean neutrals, bold tones, or something in between. As they’re made especially for your window, they fit it like a glove - no cords, no bunching, and no messy extras, just a clean, fuss-free finish. Whether you’re giving your loft a fresh new look or just want something practical that doesn’t spoil the vibe - we’ve got you covered!

How to measure and install loft blinds

  • First identify your window manufacturer and size code - this is usually located on a space either on the top edge of the window or inside the frame.
  • Can’t find a code? Measure the width and drop of the visible glass, then use our handy size charts to find your code - you can find these under the ‘How to Measure Your Blinds’ sections on each loft blind on our site!
  • To install:
    - Fix the blinds headbox to your window using screws
    - Slot in the side channels and secure them with screws
    - Attach the cord to the locking mechanism at the bottom.

How to clean and maintain skylight blinds

Keeping your skylight blinds in shape is easy:

- Dust regularly with a cloth, duster, or vacuum brush attachment

- Spot clean stains with a damp cloth and mild detergent - make sure you patch test on your sample or on an inconspicuous spot first to avoid any mishaps!

- Avoid soaking them - no one likes a soggy blind!

How to choose the right skylight blinds for you

Think about the room they’re going in, how much light you want to let through, your budget, and if energy savings are on your blind wishlist. Bedrooms? Go blackout. Kitchens? Light filtering might work best. Want to save energy? Look for thermal fabrics.

Skylight blind FAQs

Can you put blinds on skylights?

Absolutely! While standard blinds won’t work as well, purpose-built loft blinds are designed to fit and function perfectly in skylight windows.

How do you diffuse light from a skylight?

Light-filtering skylight blinds are perfect for softening sunlight without blocking it completely - great for reducing glare during peak hours.

How do you measure for skylight blinds?

It’s easy! Most skylights have a size code on the frame - just use that to order. No code? Measure the glass and use our handy size charts to workout the size you need. Still unsure? Get in touch! Our friendly team is always happy to help.

How do you block sunlight from a skylight window?

Blackout skylight blinds are your best bet. They’re made with opaque fabrics and side channels to keep sunlight completely out - ideal for loft bedrooms.

How do you close a skylight blind?

Most use a handle or bottom bar that pushes/pulls into place. For hard-to-reach windows, special extendable poles that slot straight into the bottom bar of the blind are available for easy adjustment.

How are skylight blinds installed?

They’re fixed directly onto the skylight frame using screws. Our made-for-your-window ordering process and step-by-step guide makes installation a breeze.

Are skylight blinds more expensive than standard blinds?

Not necessarily. Prices vary across the board whether you go for made-to-measure or ‘off-the-shelf’ options. Skylight blinds from made-to-measure blinds retailers can often be more affordable than official manufacturer blinds.
